For the past several months, Richard Crichton has been living in the Louisiana/Mississippi Gulf coast area. In addition to offering his assistance, Richard has been photo-documenting the ruins and rebuilding efforts of the region in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Richard’s website has been transformed into a portal that enables you to see what he has seen through the eye of his camera. “Katrina Backstage Pass” will be updated periodically as Richard travels throughout the region capturing the story of the historic moment in time. |
"By
September third, I had been glued to CNN’s nonstop reports of the tragedy,
misery and confusion in New Orleans and all along the gulf coast. I think the image
of the young boy lost and crying that aired before every commercial will forever
be etched in my mind.
Unable to prevent terrorist attacks or save Baghdad, I became determined to be of some service in the areas affected by Katrina. “You’re too late to make any really dramatic shots”, I was advised by fellow photographers. How wrong they were.
On September eighth, I became part of something so much larger in size, spirit and devastation than I could have ever imagined possible. Where were you when the twin towers fell? Where were you when Katrina hit?
These images represent my attempt at showing the tragedy, rebuilding and ongoing rebirth of Louisiana and Mississippi. There are no aerial photographs of the suffering and confusion brought about by peoples' inability to evacuate or the political ineptness afterward. Rather “backstage pass” is a ground’s eye view of the rebirth, return and renewal of a truly unique, beautiful and most vital piece of America. After all, we all live here, don’t we?
Internet communication here is hit or miss at best. Anyone interested in taking a tour or just communicating; please call 504-701-2857 or try . On a good day we might get a connection.
I am and shall remain forever grateful to the teams at INTERNATIONAL EQUIPMENT DISTRIBUTORS (IED) and UNIFIED RECOVERY GROUP (URG). They have welcomed and encouraged me the entire way. Also, Tony Paparelli of AAP Consulting in Nashville, TN. His creative ability is unmatched, and he answers the phone whenever I call. What were these people thinking?"
Thank you.
